The activist of the Democratic Center, Josías Fiesco, announced the filing of a lawsuit before the Council of State against the administrative act through which President Gustavo Petro decreed the increase in the minimum wage for 2026, with an increase of 23%, which raises the monthly income to two million pesos, including transportation assistance.

According to Fiesco, the measure lacks technical support and will have a negative impact on workers, especially those with lower incomes. In his opinion, the increase will not represent a real improvement in purchasing power, but will instead generate a general increase in the cost of living.

“Bread for today, hunger for tomorrow,” said the activist, pointing out that the increase in the minimum wage will make goods and services such as public transportation, tuition, rent and the family basket more expensive, which would end up neutralizing the economic benefit announced by the Government.

In labor matters, Fiesco warned that currently six out of every ten Colombians are in the informal sector and that, with this decision, the figure could increase to eight out of every ten citizens. In this context, he questioned whether the salary increase could deepen informality and affect the generation of formal employment, especially in small and medium-sized companies.

The activist also maintained that the decree was sued before the Council of State considering that it “lacks any technical justification” and described the measure as “an irresponsible decision.” Furthermore, he assured that President Gustavo Petro “makes fun of the workers” by presenting the increase as a benefit, when – according to his position – it will have adverse economic consequences.

Finally, Josías Fiesco expressed his confidence that the high court will review the legality of the administrative act and overturn the decision adopted by the national government, by reiterating his criticism of Petro’s economic policy and the effects that, according to him, it would have on the labor and economic conditions of the country.
