The Attorney General’s Office ratified in the second instance the sanction of suspension and special disqualification for six months against the former mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero Calle. The control entity concluded that the then official incurred improper participation in politics by using his investiture to promote the candidacy of Gustavo Petro and the Historical Pact during the 2022 elections.
The decision of the Public Ministry significantly affects the political future of the former president, whose presidential aspiration has been hindered by this type of judicial determinations.

Among the key evidence, a video published on May 9, 2022 stood out, where Quintero, from a car, pronounced the words “change, first”, a veiled message in favor of Petro’s candidacy in the first round. Publications where the former president showed his vote for the consultation of the Historical Pact were also taken into account.
The sanction, which had been issued in the first instance in July 2024, was ratified by the control body after resolving the defense’s appeal.
Despite the finality of the Attorney General’s decision, the execution of the disciplinary sanction is automatically suspended. This is because, as a rule, the case now goes to automatic review by the Council of State, which will be the final authority in charge of defining whether the disqualification against the former mayor remains firm or if it is revoked.
Bottom line: in addition to not being able to collect signatures, Quintero could not be president because he was disqualified
