The mayor of Barranquilla, Alex Char, confirmed the start of an ambitious project to expand and remodel the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium.

To carry out these large-scale works, the stage will temporarily close its doors.

This marks the beginning of a new stage that seeks to position the “Metro” as one of the most modern and competitive sports and cultural venues at an international level.

The physical transformation will be impressive: it is planned to lower the level of the field by 4 meters to allow the stands to extend to the edge of the playing field.

Thanks to this reconfiguration, the stadium’s capacity will increase significantly, reaching 60,000 seats for soccer matches and allowing up to 75,000 spectators during concerts.

This redesign not only seeks greater capacity, but also provides superior comfort for all attendees.

In addition to structural improvements to the grandstand, the project includes the total remodeling of tunnels, bathrooms and dressing rooms.

As an added value for tourism and local identity, the stadium will have a new museum dedicated to narrating the city’s sporting history.

With these works, Char’s administration is committed to a “Metro at another level”, consolidating Barranquilla as the definitive home of the National Team and an epicenter of world events.

Barranquilla has to advance quickly in the works since that stage was designated for the final of the Copa Sudamericana.

The Metro closes to give way to the expansion and remodeling works.
