After a night of intense rainfall that tested the drainage and emergency response systems, the mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, provided an assessment of the climatic situation.

According to the report consolidated by Siata, the city was the epicenter of strong atmospheric activity that left a balance of 107 electrical discharges, which caused a sudden increase in the levels of the main tributaries, including the Medellín River and the La Iguaná stream, which reached critical points during the early morning.

Despite the magnitude of the night storms, the report on the morning of this February 6 around 8:35 am indicates that the rains have dissipated in almost the entire Aburrá Valley.

However, the water persists with low intensity in southern municipalities such as Caldas, La Estrella, Sabaneta and Envigado.

These clouds are expected to move northeast and disappear over the next hour; However, the local president warned that we should not let our guard down, since the forecast for the rest of the morning indicates a high probability of new downpours.

The president’s call focused on the responsibility of the inhabitants to keep the tributaries free of garbage and debris, pointing out that the waste thrown into the channels is the main cause of overflows and flooding in low-lying areas.

“Do not throw waste and avoid settling on the banks. Taking care of the city saves lives,” the mayor stated through X.

Risk management authorities remain constantly monitoring the level sensors, especially in hillside areas where the soils are saturated by accumulated water.

Citizens are recommended to report any anomaly or cracks in the land to the emergency line 123 and pay attention to updates from the Early Warning System regarding the possible return of heavy rains before noon.
