The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) carried out the release of a two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) and its breeding in a tropical humid forest in the municipality of Pacho, after a care and recovery process that guaranteed its safe return to the wild.

The animals were initially found on a public road that leads to the rural area of the municipality of Villagómez and handed over to the CAR by the Carabineros de Pacho Police. At the time of rescue, the mother had a laceration on the front of her head, while both specimens showed signs of dehydration.

For three days, the CAR technical team carried out a clinical evaluation of the animals, cleaning and disinfecting the mother’s wound, as well as hydrating it and the calf orally. After responding positively to the treatment, it was determined that they were fit to be released into a suitable habitat.

The release was carried out in an area with high forest cover in the municipality of Pacho, characterized by its diversity of native plant species, which ensures an optimal environment for their feeding and survival.

“The return of this sloth and its offspring is the result of immediate attention and joint work between the community, the Carabineros Police and the CAR. Our main objective is to guarantee that wild animals return to their habitat in optimal conditions, remembering that fauna is not a pet and its protection is everyone’s responsibility,” said the director of the Rionegro regional of the CAR.

The corporation took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of reporting any discovery of wild animals at risk to environmental authorities, avoiding their improper manipulation, possession or transfer. These types of actions are part of the CAR’s commitment to the conservation of biodiversity and the proper management of the territory’s ecosystems.
