Two days have passed since the United States government entered Caracas, Venezuela, to capture President Nicolás Maduro on charges associated with drug trafficking and terrorism, a situation that generated concern about the possibility of a mass migration of Venezuelans to Colombia. However, so far the feared exodus has not materialized.

The general director of Migration Colombia, Gloria Arriero, reported that so far no type of mass migration has been observed from Venezuela to Colombia and the border crossings operate normally.

The teams on the ground made up of attorneys, representatives and officials of the Ombudsman’s Office have so far not reported any new developments regarding the possible migration that was planned or situations that put people living on the border between the two countries at risk.

With this panorama in mind, the attorney Néstor Osuna stated: “The public ministry, led by the Attorney General’s Office, will continue to be present at border points that could represent novel migration situations.”

Government installed PMU in Cúcuta for prevention

Although the Attorney General’s Office has not detected any type of mass migration, the government of President Gustavo Petro installed a Unified Command Post (PMU) in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, to address the supposed social effects that Maduro’s capture was going to generate.

In fact, even the Ministry of Health decreed a yellow alert for the hospital network in the border region and called on the EPS to comply with their obligations and contribute to stabilizing the flow of resources for the health network of those regions.

The Colombian government maintains all humanitarian care and surveillance protocols active on the extensive border of more than 2,200 kilometers that it shares with Venezuela, while closely observing the political and social events that are developing in the neighboring country after the capture of Maduro on charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.
