The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) confirmed that the increase in precipitation in recent days is due to the passage of a prefrontal line from the northern hemisphere. However, the alert remains on, since the entity announced that a second cold front is approaching and will generate a significant increase in cloudiness and storms in several areas of the national territory.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Carolina Rueda, deputy director of Meteorology at Ideam, this atypical behavior is being reinforced by a low pressure system in the Caribbean Sea.
This phenomenon will not only bring intense rains, but also strong winds and high waves that will mainly affect the Caribbean coast.

For the next few days, this second front is expected to cause abundant cloudiness with indirect impact on the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, as well as in the Gulf of Urabá and the western sector of the northern Colombian coast.
The forecast for this end of the week is for “rains of varying intensity,” with a high probability of sectorized thunderstorms.
Among the departments that will receive the greatest impact are Antioquia, Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Santanderes, and a large part of the Andean and Amazon region.
The Ideam also warned of significant accumulations of water in critical points such as the inter-Andean valleys of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Given this scenario, the authorities recommend that citizens be alert to river levels and avoid maritime activities in the areas of influence of the cold front.
The combination of persistent cloudiness and soils saturated by previous rains increases the risk of landslides in hillside areas. The institute will continue to monitor the advance of this cold air mass that, although it is characteristic of winter in the north of the continent, is hitting the southwestern Caribbean and the interior of Colombia with unusual force.
