The rope of total peace was stretched to its maximum. The Clan del Golfo, which now calls itself the Gaitanista Army of Colombia (EGC), announced that its delegation at the negotiating table will provisionally suspend talks with the National Government.

The decision, which falls like a bucket of cold water on the dialogue processes in the regions, was made after learning of the commitments that President Gustavo Petro would have agreed with Donald Trump in the White House.

The illegal armed group erupted in indignation upon learning that its top leader, alias “Chiquito Malo,” was included in the list of the three most wanted drug lords that the Colombian president promised to capture in the coming months.

According to the statement issued by the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the EGC, whether they remain at the negotiating table remains to be seen while they carry out “consultations” to verify the veracity of the leaked information.

In its statement, the Gulf Clan did not hesitate to attack President Petro, ensuring that the president put his personal interests and his international image above peace in the territories, where they claim to be the only ones who have complied with the agreement.

In the face of this crisis, the Ombudsman, Iris Marín, was forceful in pointing out that justice for victims cannot be a bargaining chip.

Marín warned that if remaining at the negotiating table means giving these groups freedom to continue committing crimes and expanding, the process loses all validity.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Defense, led by General (r) Pedro Sánchez, firmly maintains the objective of neutralizing aliases “Pablito”, “Iván Mordisco” and “Chiquito Malo”, the country is waiting to see if this slamming of the door by the Gaitanistas is the definitive end of the rapprochements or a tactic to pressure new judicial benefits.
