Colombian tennis player María Camila Osorio reached a historic milestone in her career this Saturday, January 31, by becoming champion of the WTA 125 in Manila.
In a demanding final played on the center court of the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, the Cucuteña managed to prevail against the Croatian Donna Vekic, number 72 in the world ranking, after a two and a half hour battle that kept the spectators in the capital of the Philippines in suspense.
This triumph not only represents a new trophy for her showcase, but also serves as a personal revenge, since Osorio had fallen to the European in their only previous match during the Cincinnati Open 2022.
The road to the title was a test of resilience for Colombia’s number one racket, who had to overcome an adverse start after losing the first set by a resounding 2-6.
Hail the Queen! Camila Osorio, champion of WTA 125 in Manila
However, Camila managed to redirect her game in the second set, where an early break in the second game allowed her to gain confidence and close the set with a 6–3 in her favor.
The definition moved to a third set of maximum parity, where effectiveness was the key; Osorio managed to achieve two of the three breaks recorded in the final set to seal the match with a tight 7–5 that gave him the championship.
The statistics of the match reflected the strength of the Colombian in crucial moments, registering a 72% effectiveness in the points won with her first serve and saving 8 of the 11 break opportunities that her rival had.
At the end of the match, an emotional María Camila highlighted the sentimental value of this victory by ensuring that winning her first hard court tournament away from home feels like a true fairy tale. This success marks an important precedent in her career, being her first title in the WTA 125 category.
Thanks to this outstanding performance in Asian territory, the Colombian tennis player will climb four positions in the international ranking to be ranked 80th in the WTA ranking.
Without much time for celebrations, the champion is already setting her sights on Europe, where she is preparing to debut at the WTA 250 in Cluj-Napoca in Romania.
Her next challenge will be to face the local Jaqueline Cristian in the round of 32, seeking to maintain the winning momentum that today has her as the great protagonist of South American tennis.
