In a lightning operation that shook the wards of the El Pedregal prison in Medellín, the authorities managed to dismantle a real communications and drug distribution center that operated behind bars.
The intervention, led by the Medellín Mayor’s Office in conjunction with the Police Gaula and Inpec, focused on a pavilion that houses 196 inmates, many of them identified as belonging to high-impact structures such as the ELN, the FARC and the Clan del Golfo.
The main objective of the prison is not only custody, but also to prevent extortion and attacks in the city from continuing to be coordinated from its cells.
During the thorough search, the uniformed officers found elements that confirm how criminals circumvent security to maintain contact with the outside world.

Among what was seized, eight cell phones, a tablet and, most surprising, an internet modem that allowed the ringleaders to have a permanent connection to direct their illicit activities stand out. In addition to the technological equipment, ten telephone accessories and seven knives that were used to maintain internal control and threaten other prison inmates were seized.
The microtrafficking component was also revealed in this procedure. The authorities reported the discovery of 220 grams of coca base, 28 grams of “tusi” and 54 grams of marijuana.
This operation in the El Pedregal prison joins a national offensive to clean the penitentiary centers, where in recent months more than 150 cell phones have already been recovered between this establishment and the Bellavista prison, thus stopping hundreds of extortion calls that affect local commerce.
