The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, confirmed that the capital of Antioquia is fully prepared and fully willing to receive the Colombian National Team in its farewell match prior to the World Cup.

Medellín is the most soccer city in the country, and from here the president sent a clear message to the Colombian Soccer Federation, the home of the Antioqueños is open if the sports leadership decides so.

The possibility of seeing the “Tricolor” at the Atanasio Girardot arises due to a coincidence of calendars and infrastructure works at the Metropolitan Stadium, the usual headquarters of the National Team.

As will be remembered, in Curramba, the construction processes that would prevent the meeting from taking place there have already begun.

Although the Atanasio Girardot will also enter a deep renovation phase, Gutiérrez explained that the start of construction is projected for June or July of this year, which would leave a perfect time window for the sporting event.

Medallo, the most soccer-loving city, is ready to say goodbye to the Colombian National Team before going to the World Cup

“If the Federation so determines, Medellín is ready and we would be happy to receive our National Team as a farewell before they leave for the World Cup,” said the mayor.

Beyond the sporting event, Gutiérrez took the opportunity to provide news about the future of the city’s sporting scene. He highlighted that the stadium modernization project is advancing at a steady pace.

The president indicated that it is expected that the designs will be formally filed in mid-February and once the curatorship phase is over, the legal processes will proceed to assign the work.

The goal, said the president, is for the machines to start working between June and July 2026.

With this announcement, Medellín not only seeks to consolidate itself as a hub for major international events, but also to ensure that its infrastructure is on par with the best on the continent before the end of this year.
