Preparations for the meeting between the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, have entered their final phase. After months of tensions on social networks, diplomacy between both nations seems to have found a strategic respite.
Last Friday, January 23, Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, held a high-level communication that was described by the San Carlos Palace as a “very productive” dialogue.
In this call, the foundations were laid for the president to be received in Washington with all the honors and security guarantees that a state visit requires.
Diplomacy has had to work at full speed to iron out rough edges and finalize an agenda that not only remains in the protocol, but also addresses the problems that keep both governments awake at night.

As confirmed by the Foreign Ministry in its official channels, the mutual wish is that the meeting on February 3 is a resounding success.
The central axes of the meeting are already on the table: the frontal fight against transnational organized crime (putting a magnifying glass on the critical situation on the borders), regional security and the search for new economic opportunities.
However, from Tumaco, Nariño, President Petro has already begun to set his own line of speech.
The president assured that he does not travel to the United States to talk about military weapons. “I’m not going to talk about missiles,” he said, proposing instead a metaphor for peace focused on agriculture and climate change, suggesting “bombing the earth with seeds” instead of explosives.
Despite the winds of change that Bogotá proposes, the White House maintains its focus on security cooperation and immigration control. What is certain is that this meeting will set the course of binational relations for the rest of the year 2026.
