The Attorney General’s Office withdrew the request to bring charges against Augusto Rodríguez, director of the National Protection Unit (UNP), for alleged omission in the security of the senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, murdered on June 7, 2025 in the Modelia neighborhood, Fontibón, Bogotá. The decision was made after identifying a conflict of powers within the prosecuting body.
Initially, a sectional prosecutor from Bogotá had requested the hearing of charges for malfeasance by omission, under the thesis that Rodríguez had not responded to 23 requests from the senator to reinforce his security scheme before the attack that ended with his death. However, the creation of the Special Task Group, in charge of centralizing all investigations related to the assassination, determined that the local prosecutor did not have the authority to continue with the case independently.
Although the accusation was withdrawn, the reports and evidence on Rodríguez’s alleged omissions are not ruled out, and now it will be the Special Task Group that will evaluate whether to resume the request for accusation or follow another legal path to clarify the possible responsibility of the director of the UNP.

Progress in the investigation of the murder of Uribe Turbay
So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the crime, including a minor who shot the senator and who was punished with seven years in prison for attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons. The Police maintain as the main hypothesis that the attack was ordered by the Second Marquetalia, a dissident of the former FARC led by alias Iván Márquez.
The Prosecutor’s Office reiterated that the investigation remains open and that the analysis of all the evidentiary material will continue to determine responsibilities, while the concentration of the case in the Special Task Group seeks to guarantee unity, comprehensiveness and respect for the internal procedures of the prosecuting entity.
