Record-Breaking Massacres Reported in Colombia as 2026 Toll Reaches 97, Indepaz Warns
Violence across Colombia has reached a alarming milestone this year. According to the latest report released by the non-governmental organization Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), Colombia has recorded 97 massacres resulting in 376 fatalities as of October 2026.
Human rights monitoring organizations emphasize that these grim figures make 2026 the deadliest year in terms of massacres over the last decade. The persistent armed conflict, disputes among illegal armed groups over territorial control, and targeted violence against rural and urban communities continue to fuel the escalating security crisis across various departments of the country.
Civil society organizations and human rights defenders are calling on state institutions and international bodies to intensify protection measures and address the root causes of security breakdown in affected regions.
