The total closure of the La Limona bridge unleashed a road contingency that seriously affected mobility between Itagüí and the district of San Antonio de Prado, in Medellín.

Given the emergency, Mayor Federico Gutiérrez made a public statement in which he explained the causes of the damage, the immediate actions and the path to a definitive solution.

As detailed by the president, the emergency originated from an undermining generated by the strong rainy season, which caused the destabilization of the land and the collapse of some EPM pipes on the side corresponding to the municipality of Itagüí.

This situation forced the preventive closure of the bridge to protect the lives of pedestrians and drivers.

“The damage is sudden, a product of the winter. As a preventive measure, the decision was made to completely close, which generated the collapse of mobility that we saw yesterday, especially for the community of Itagüí and San Antonio de Prado,” explained Gutiérrez, who assured that he maintains permanent contact with the mayors of Itagüí and La Estrella to jointly address the emergency.

The mayor was emphatic in clarifying that the emergency is not related to the highway megaproject that is being carried out in the sector. On the contrary, he pointed out that thanks to the fact that this work was already awarded by the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area, with an investment close to $48,000 million, today there is a contractor in the area that allows immediate action.

Adding the property management of Medellín and Itagüí, the complete project will reach $80,000 million.

In addition, he indicated that the objective is that in less than a week the second lane will be recovered, returning to an operation similar to the one that existed before the emergency.

Parallel to the immediate attention, the definitive works will advance, which include the demolition of properties already acquired and the construction of a new road solution, which includes a viaduct and widening of the road. The mayor even announced that San Antonio de Prado will have a structural mobility solution in the future such as a metrocable, whose designs are already underway.

Finally, Gutiérrez acknowledged the inconvenience caused to citizens and assured that all decisions are being made “on the side of the community”, prioritizing life, safety and a rapid response to the La Limona bridge emergency.
