A coordinated operation between the Mayor’s Office of Medellín, the Metropolitan Police and the Attorney General’s Office allowed the rescue of 46 animals (16 cats and 30 dogs) from a home in San Antonio de Prado.
The action was in response to a complaint of irregular accumulation and animal abuse, finding the animals in precarious and overcrowded conditions.
The Secretary of Security and Coexistence, Manuel Villa Mejía, described the discovery as an “outrageous panorama.”
Inside the property, a strong smell of ammonia, lack of ventilation, and a chaotic atmosphere were reported. Many of the rescued dogs and cats, several of them elderly, were underweight, had deteriorated coats, skin problems, parasites and nervous behaviors typical of an abusive environment.

The 46 animals were immediately transferred to the La Perla Animal Welfare Center, where they received priority attention, including medical evaluation, deworming, vaccination and registration. Due to its serious condition, one of the canines had to be hospitalized.

The Secretary of the Environment, Marcela Ruiz, indicated that the animals are already in the rehabilitation process in La Perla.
“The protection and well-being of our animals is a priority, not only of the Mayor’s Office of Medellín, but of all citizens,” he stated.
The Mayor’s Office of Medellín adds nearly 3,900 rescues and more than 500 attentions for complaints of animal abuse so far in 2025.
The mayor’s office reaffirms the strengthening of the veterinary service, sterilization programs and support for cases that require special intervention to combat irregular accumulation, a relevant phenomenon in the Public Policy for Animal Protection and Welfare.
